Jalen Rose Due in Court for Sentencing Today

The former pro basketball player faces up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in West Bloomfield on March 11.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS — Former U-M Fab Five star and NBA player Jalen Rose faces up to 93 days in jail for drunken driving when he is sentenced today.

Judge Kimberly Small of the 48th District Court is scheduled to sentence Rose in the incident in which he crashed his sport utility vehicle on a snowy road in West Bloomfield earlier this year.

Small pointed out that they were probably doubles, meaning the equivalent of 12 drinks.

Rose said that after 3½ or four hours of drinking, he got behind the wheel to drive. He crashed his white Cadillac Escalade, with a female passenger, when it slid off Walnut Lake Road west of Middlebelt Road and overturned. He was found there by an off-duty Troy police officer. Neither Rose nor his passenger was injured.

Rose opted to take a blood test at in West Bloomfield instead of a Breathalyzer at the scene. The blood test showed a 0.12 blood-alcohol content level – above the 0.08 legal limit – and Rose was issued a citation.

“Contrary to media reports … Rose cooperated with the police and the authorities in this matter,” attorney James Burdick told Small at the May 25 hearing.

Rose played for 13 years in the NBA, reaching the finals with Indiana in 2000. He was also part of the University of Michigan’s famous Fab Five lineup, which reached the NCAA title game in 1992 and 1993.
