Vandals Damage Home, Businesses Burglarized

officers reported to 88 alarms, 42 car accidents (including nine Wednesday, mostly because of rainy weather) and 12 arrests from Oct. 12-20. Following are highlights of the police reports:

Home vandalized while owners away

The interior of a home on the 4100 block of Haggerty Road was reported Monday to have been heavily damaged while the homeowner was away Oct. 7-17, according to Diamond.

Diamond listed the damage to the home:

• Spraypaint was found on the walls of the basement, stairs and refridgerator.
• Dry and wet groceries were thrown all over the walls and furniture.
• Toner cartridges and personal records were dumped all over the home.
• The suspects either consumed or dumped various bottles of alcohol that were stored in the home and the glass bottles were broken.
• A cloth was shoved down the toilet.
• Oil and transmission fluid were on the floor in the garage.
• A guitar was stolen.

The suspects gained entry through broken windows in the basement and a screen to the bathroom window that was torn apart, Diamond said.

Neighbors reported seeing teenage boys coming in and out of the house during the period, but did not report suspicious behavior, Diamond said. There are no suspects and the homeowner is not known to have enemies, he said, and police are investigating.

Diamond said he's confident the suspects will be apprehended. "Obviously, it's kids being stupid. Only a guitar was stolen and that's certainly something a kid would take. Many times, especially with young offenders, they'll talk. They want to tell somebody about all the things they were doing," Diamond said.

Diamond suggested to residents that if they know they will be away for a week, to notify neighbors and ask someone to check in on the residence occasionally.

Electronics stolen from businesses

Burglaries of businesses next door to each other were reported this past Monday to have occurred sometime between the weekend of Oct. 14-16, according to Lt. Tim Diamond.

Workers at Clinical Psychological Services and the University of Nursing in the office park at 5777 W. Maple Rd. reported the break-ins to police Monday morning after discovering windows on the south side of the respective businesses had been pried open with an unknown tool, Diamond said.

A 32-inch Samsung television worth $600, a DVD player of unknown make worth $100, an Apple iPad worth $500 and an Apple desktop computer worth $1,500 were reported stolen from the businesses. There is no surveillance footage available, Diamond said.

"These are probably the same culprits," Diamond said. "There are no suspects and police are investigating. We've processed for fingerprints already."
