UPDATED: West Bloomfield Teen's Death Mourned by Andover Classmates

Counselors work with students at the Bloomfield Hills school to cope with the death of 17-year-old junior Peter Catcho.

A West Bloomfield Township 17-year-old died unexpectedly overnight, sending his Andover High School community into shock and mourning today.

Lt. Tim Diamond said Peter Catcho, an Andover junior well known by his peers for his hobby of weightlifting, died sometime after going to bed around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Diamond said Catcho had no previous medical conditions that would offer clues as to why he died.

However, sometime around 9 p.m. last night, a tweet from Catcho's Twitter account, @PeterCatcho, said "Heart beating really fast for some reason, dad said I might go to the ER hopefully it stops soon #notcool".

According to the Oakland County Medical Examiner's office, the cause of death is under investigation pending the results of toxicology reports.

"We got a call around 6:40 this morning from his parents, who said that they had gone into his room and found him," Diamond said. "His father administered CPR and called paramedics, but they could not get him and he was pronounced dead on the scene."

Diamond said Catcho, who was known in his community as a weightlifter, had lifted that afternoon and complained of chest pains afterward. His parents and sister were home at the time of his death.

At Andover, students were informed of their classmate's death with an all-school announcement. There was what one student called an unusual quietness and a sense of shock. Students texted parents and friends and some went home.

Many students took to their cell phones and social media to express their feelings. Examples from Twitter accounts included:

  • @Lost_in_stereo7: R.I.P Peter Catcho you were the kindest, sweetest kid that anyone knew. You definitely will be missed in this world.

Andover parents were informed via an e-mail to parents from Sue Cavalli, secretary to Andover Principal Rob Durecka: "At this time, we are seeking additional information and will share this as it becomes available. ... We are all shocked and saddened by this unfortunate news. Please keep Peter Catcho's family in your thoughts and prayers." The message is also posted on the school's website.

Andover students were seeking counseling from social workers and psychologists called in from around the district Thursday, said Betsy Erikson, director of communications for the Bloomfield Hills school district.

“At this point, we have a grieving community without a lot of information. It’s up to the family to guide us,” Erikson said. “With parents’ approval, we’re allowing students to leave to be with their family.”

“He was very well-liked, and he was characterized as a great, kind person."

Visitation is set from 3-8 p.m. Friday at Southfield Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mother of God Church in Southfield.
