Local Governmental Results: Economou Ureste Remains West Bloomfield Supervisor

Greater West Bloomfield area voters have spoken and through their Tuesday ballots, have indicated that current leadership is doing a good job. 

Incumbent Supervisor Michele Economou Ureste topped challenger and former Supervisor David Flaisher by a wide margin, with 19,576 total votes (67.43 percent) to Flaisher's 9,310 total (32.07 percent).

In August 2008, Economou Ureste defeated then-incumbent Flaisher by similar numbers in the Democratic primary, 64.5-35.5 percent. This time, Flaisher ran as an independent candidate, to no avail. Neither Economou Ureste nor Flaisher could be reached for comment Tuesday night.

Incumbent Clerk Cathy Shaughnessy and Treasurer Teri Weingarden ran unopposed, collecting 98 percent and 97.94 percent of the vote, respectively.

Incumbent Democrat Trustees Steven Kaplan, Larry Brown and Howard Rosenberg, along with newcomer Diane Rosenfeld Swimmer, emerged to win their election over Republican Tom Pustelak. 

Kaplan led the way with 12,397 total votes, or 22.27 percent of the vote. Brown finished with 11,872 total votes, while Rosenberg finished with 11,435 total votes, and Rosenfeld Swimmer with 11,191 total votes. Pustelak collected 8,598 total votes, or 15.45 percent.

West Bloomfield residents also voted incumbent Democrat Parks and Recreation Commissioners Marc Jeffries, Margie Fiszman-Kirsch, Carol Hack and Mervin Aronoff to new four year-terms. Newcomers Sheryl Mitchell (Democrat), Paul Karmo (Republican) and Joe Green (no party) round out the commission.

The West Bloomfield Library Board welcomed incumbents Judith Holtz, Arlene Bordman, Ken Macon, Wendy Osthaus, Thomas Meyer and Carol Kravetz for new, four-year terms.

In Sylvan Lake, residents voted incumbent Russell Meskin to his second four-year City Council term with 580 total votes, or 41.05 percent of the total vote. Meskin will be joined by the second name on the ballot, Eucharist Cassar, who took first in the race with 604 total votes, or 42.75 of the total. Cassar fills a seat left by Sharon Maurina, who did not seek another term.

Write-in candidates Megan Rogers-Zumbach and John Shepp received a combined 229 votes, or 16.21 of the total.

Orchard Lake residents voted in Jim Talpos with 739 total votes (34.47 percent), Jackie Beach with 731 total votes (34.1 percent) and Jason M. Silver with 661 votes (30.83 percent) to fill three spots on the City Council.

Keego Harbor residents voted in Joel Yoder with 660 total votes (51.81 percent) and John Newberry with 593 total votes (46.55 percent) to fill two spots on the City Council.

Results are considered unofficial until approved by the county board of canvassers.
