Taking the Oath of Office: New Sylvan Lake City Councilmen

Here's a recap of what happened at Wednesday's meeting.

Highlights from Wednesday night's Sylvan Lake City Council meeting included:

1. Mike Zubrzycki, the Mayor Pro-Tem of Sylvan Lake was appointed Mayor by unanimous vote, while Councilman Brian Etter was appointed Mayor Pro-Tem by a 4-1 vote. The winners of the Nov. 6 council election, Eucharist Cassar and Russell Meskin, were sworn in.

2. The weekly day of trash collection on Wednesday will soon be no more, as the council approved a move to Thursdays. The move to move was suggested by the Rizzo Environmental group after the Sterling Heights-based trash hauler absorbed the city's trash pickup from Richfield Equities in the fall. The Thursday schedule will begin early next year, said Dan Garman of Rizzo.

3. City Manager John Martin updated the council on a water main break last month near Orchard Lake Road and Greer Boulevard. Some residents were without water on Nov. 21 as crews fixed the damage. The affected portion of road will likely go unrepaired until next year, Martin said, although a temporary fix has been installed.

4. An agreement has been made with Road Commission for Oakland County allowing Sylvan Lake to pay for construction of a crosswalk beacon using funds divided between the city, state, and road authorities.
