1 Week Left to File for School Board Election

Two candidates, including one incumbent, have filed to run for two positions on the West Bloomfield School District Board of Education.

Voters in the West Bloomfield School District will elect two members to its Board of Education in November.

The deadline for candidates to file for a spot on the ballot is 4 p.m. Aug. 16.

Who is running?

This year, the terms of board members Treasurer Nelson Hersh and Trustee Melanie Torbert are set to expire. As of Tuesday morning, only Hersh had filed to seek re-election. Hersh, a 21-year Orchard Lake resident was elected to serve for the first time in 2003 and re-elected in 2007.

According to the Oakland County Clerk's office, Orchard Lake resident Julie Beaty has submitted 45 petitions to run.

What does the board do?

Positions on the board are four-year terms. According to the district's website, the three main responsibilities of the seven-person board are hiring the superintendent, adopting policies, and adopting the budget.

How to file

To have your name placed on the ballot, you need to be a registered voter and live in the district. You also need a minimum of 40 signatures of qualified and registered voters or pay a $100 filing fee
