Free Expo Provides Solutions and Resources for Caregivers

A 2011 report indicates that unpaid family caregivers are one of the largest contributors to the United States health system, providing about $450 billion worth of care to aging parents, family members or friends annually. While saving the state and country’s health care system billions, the cost to the family caregiver is high - impacting their physical and mental health, finances, career and quality of life. Experts say overwhelmed caregivers need access to resources, services and support.

The Area Agency on Aging 1-B (AAA 1-B) presents the 12th Solutions for Family Caregiver Expo, an event designed to empower family caregivers by providing access to experts, services, resources and information on the same day, under one roof. This year’s Caregiver Expo will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Diamond Center at the Suburban Collection Showplace (formerly called the Rock Financial Showplace – located at 46100 Grand River in Novi). The event is free, parking is free, complimentary morning refreshments are provided, and caregivers have a chance to win valuable prizes and giveaways. Afternoon snacks will be available on a cash and carry basis.

“Family caregivers are the foundation of the long term care system — making  it possible for their loved ones to remain at home or in a place where they can ensure they  receive quality care,” said Tina Abbate Marzolf, chief executive officer, AAA 1-B. “All caregivers – from those who provide minimal support to those who give around the clock care – will benefit from attending the free 2011 Solutions for Family Caregivers Expo.”

Respite care provided on-site

For caregivers who cannot leave their loved one alone to attend the Caregiver Expo, the AAA 1-B is offering free on-site “Respite Care at the Expo.” Professional care is available for aging or disabled individuals who cannot be left alone. Morning refreshments, lunch and interactive activities like singing, games, crafts, and social interaction are provided by the Alzheimer’s Association - Greater Michigan Chapter and the Macomb County Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers.

Due to limited space, reservations for “Respite Care at the Expo” must be made by October 7, 2011. Respite care is strictly for adults. For more information or to make a reservation, caregivers can visit aaa1b.com or contact the AAA 1-B at 1-800-852-7795.

“We understand that caregivers have a difficult time leaving their loved ones in the care of a stranger and in an unfamiliar setting,” Abbate Marzolf said. “Respite Care at the Expo means caregivers can check in on loved ones and be confident they are safe while they are attending the event.”
