Six Candidates File for Two Open Positions in West Bloomfield School Board Election

Trustee Melanie Torbert will not defend her position Nov. 8.

Voters in the will select two of six candidates for six-year terms on the Board of Education on Nov. 8.

The deadline for candidates to file for a spot on the ballot was 4 p.m. Tuesday. According to the Oakland County Clerk's office, Julie Beaty, Karen M. Faett, Carol Finkelstein, Nelson Hersh, CharRhonda Moye and John Reed are on the ballot.

Hersh, currently the school board's treasurer, is the only incumbent in the race.

Trustee Melanie Torbert, whose four-year term expires Dec. 31, did not file for re-election.

According to the WBSD website, the role of the board is to carry out mandatory laws as expressed in the Michigan Constitution and Michigan statutes, federal laws and regulations relating to schools and school districts. The three main responsibilities of the board are: hiring the superintendent, adopting policies and adopting the budget.
