Walled Lake Central Students Earn College Merit Scholarships

Brooke Feinstein and Sandeep Siva are among 4,800 students across the U.S. to earn the college-sponsored awards.

Brooke Feinstein and Sandeep Siva, Walled Lake Central High School students, are among 4,800 students across the U.S. who have earned College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships.

Feinstein won a $2,000 National Merit Northwestern University Scholarship, which can be renewed for up to four years while she attends Northwestern, where she plans to study biology. Feinstein competed on the swim and ski teams, was a member of the National Honor Society and Temple Shir Shalom youth group. She is the daughter of Joelle and Mark Levine and William and Elyse Feinstein.

Guidance counselor Lynne Morse said Feinstein is "an extremely deserving young woman. She has challenged herself throughout high school in every curricular area; she has an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and a remarkable work ethic.  Brooke’s maturity and demeanor stood out the first time I met her.”

Siva won a National Merit Michigan State University Scholarship, but declined the scholarship as he plans to attend the University of Michigan to study engineering. He serves as a PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) student representative and competed with the varsity tennis team. He is the son of Nirupama Siva and SivaArunachalam.

“Sandeep is truly an amazing individual with so much talent, not only academically but he is also an exceptional violinist and Black Belt in Tae Kwan Do," guidance counselor Ann Marie Rutherford said. "He has a deep passion for math and science and is eager to begin the next stage in his life as a Wolverine.”

Scholarship winners are chosen by officials of the sponsoring college or university. Each finalist who accepts a college-sponsored award must use it at the institution financing it; a change in college choice cancels the scholarship.
