Walled Lake Students to Make Up Day Missed As Result of Transportation Issues

Students will have to attend another full day of school in June to make up for the day of instruction missed when bus drivers called in sick, according to the Walled Lake School district.

Students in the Walled Lake Consolidated School district will have one less day of summer vacation after the district says it was forced to add an additional day of school to make up for the day missed when a large number of district bus drivers called in sick.

Nearly one-quarter of the district's bus drivers called in sick earlier in May, and the district cancelled classes as a result.

WWJ-AM reported that the move was "an apparent protest" over the district's decision to outsource busing.

Early last week, district officials sent out a letter explaining to parents the need for the additional day.

"...we have learned, as a result of the lost day of instruction last week, that Walled Lake Schools does not meet the required number of days for the school year and we will have to add a day to make up the lost day," Judy Evola, director of communications and community relations said in the letter.

According to Evola, Tuesday, June 11, is now a full day of school (instead of a half-day), and Wednesday, June 12, is a half-day of school.

The Oakland Press reports that if the district did not make up this time, it would cost the district $732,745.
