Junior Sydni Davis Powers West Bloomfield Basketball Team

The Lakers girls team toppled Walled Lake Northern on the strength of guard Sydni Davis' 32 points.

 girls basketball coach came into this season expecting to see a cohesive, if small, group of starters on the varsity team. 

That cohesive group combined to force 22 turnovers Wednesday as the Lakers beat Walled Lake Northern, 60-41, led by junior guard Sydni Davis, MI Prep Zone reported. The Lakers advanced to the finals of the Rochester Holiday Classic girls basketball tournament for the second straight year with the win. The team moves on to play at 6 p.m. Friday against the tournament-host Falcons, which beat Mt. Clemens on Wednesday.

Ashley Ziegler scored 10 points and Melissa Christenson contributed six points and 11 rebounds for West Bloomfield (3-2).

Prior to the season starting earlier in December, Larkin touted his starting five.

“We have pretty good scorers coming back,” Larkin said. “And all our five starters this year have varsity starting experience.”

Larkin conceded it might the smallest team he’s coached at West Bloomfield in his five seasons, but it makes up for the lack of size with tremendous team chemistry and athleticism.

“This is by far the most cohesive team I’ve had,” Larkin said. “We are real guard heavy. If we are going to win, we’ve got to spread the floor and run and gun. We can’t get in too many half-court sets, we aren’t big enough.”
