Lakers Lacrosse Can't Recover Against Flyers, Fall 10-8

Senior attacker Nathan Rabens scores six goals in a losing effort that dropped West Bloomfield High's record to 7-5.

The boys lacrosse team had the result they wanted going into halftime against / Thursday, with the score tied at five. However, after the Flyers scored three goals in the third quarter and two more in the fourth, WBHS couldn’t muster enough on offense to avoid a 10-8 loss at home.

“It’s hard to come back after the other team makes a run in a game like this,” said North-Harrison Head Coach Bryan Lamble, whose Flyers improved to 6-9. “We were obviously disappointed with the way the first half ended but we came out well in the second and picked it up. It’s a good win, it’s a character win.”

WBHS had climbed back into the game after scoring two goals in the last 21 seconds of the first half, thanks to attacker Nathan Rabens. The senior ended up notching six total in the game to lead all scorers. Prior to that, however, assistant coach Scott McNab said that his Lakers had simply come out lacking the intensity needed to beat a division rival such as North-Harrison.

“It all stems back from the beginning of the game, just falling behind and not executing,” McNab said. “We know what we can do, but we didn’t come out of the gate with the intensity on defense that we needed.”

North-Harrison junior Kyle Wood got the Flyers on the scoreboard early after senior defenseman Allen Lee forced a turnover deep in Lakers territory, then made a long pass to the streaking midfielder Wood f0r the game’s first goal with 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Flyers junior attacker Derek Ried added a goal in the first quarter and one in the third for a total of two goals, and Shane Moran, Hunter Gillick, and Eddie Huckleby all scored one goal. Max Dubin and Zach Lederman both scored single goals for the Lakers.

However, after Rabens put WBHS on top at the beginning of the third with a goal at 10:04, it was senior attacker Davis Trapp who seized control of the game for the Flyers. After scoring one goal in the second quarter, Trapp followed in the third with two goals in a span of 13 seconds, ending at 9:23, to give North-Harrison the lead. The Flyers never relinquished it.

WBHS senior midfielder Alex Lauri agreed that Trapp’s two goals in the third quarter seemed to suck the momentum from the Lakers, but said that the loss would not affect the team moving forward.

“Our biggest problem was on defense, letting guys come in to the crease and just not passing and catching well. They’re things that we know we can do well, we just have to execute it. Our intensity just wasn’t up there tonight,” said Lauri, whose team fell to 7-5 with the loss.

“Well watch the Red Wings tonight, and tomorrow, we’ll take care of business and do what we need to do.”

WBHS returns to the field tomorrow at 6 p.m. to take on Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggitt School at home. The Flyers’ next game is May 17 on the road against Rochester Adams High School. Their game begins at 7 p.m.
