West Bloomfield Parent's Open Carry Video Draws Media Attention

The parent's video showed him openly carrying a holstered pistol on Scotch Elementary School property.

Video of a Scotch Elementary School dad who openly carried a holstered handgun on school property drew the attention of a metro Detroit television station this week.

WJBK-TV aired a segment Thursday that included portions of the YouTube.com video; however, the video had been removed from the site by the user on Friday. A story posted on the WJBK-TV website indicated the dad recorded the video while "walking around the school to see what the reaction from parents would be."

According to the report, "The video then shows the man explaining that those who hold a concealed pistol license (CPL) are allowed to open carry in gun-free zones. CPL holders are not, however, allowed to conceal their weapons in gun-free zones, he explains."

The station contacted West Bloomfield Township Police Chief Michael Patton, who said the father "was abiding by the law." A proposed state law would make it illegal for gun owners to open carry on school property, he added.
